Terms of service
Settled is a free tool for recording shared costs. These terms are the agreement between you and Settled when you use it.
Last updated: 24 October 2026. Settled is run by Daven Chang, an individual developer in the United States ("we", "us"). By creating an account, or by creating or joining a quick split, you agree to these terms and to how we handle data as described in the privacy policy. Questions go to support@settledsplit.com.
Who can use Settled
You must be at least 13 years old to use Settled. If you are under 18, you need a parent's or guardian's permission. One account per person: keep your password to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else has used your account.
What Settled is, and isn't
Settled is a record-keeping tool. It adds up what you and the people you split with enter, and shows who owes whom. It never holds, sends or receives money. "Mark received" and transfers only record that a payment happened somewhere else.
- Balances are only as accurate as what's entered. We do the arithmetic carefully (in whole cents, so totals add up), but we don't check anyone's entries, and mistakes in what people type are theirs to fix.
- Records are informal. An amount in Settled is not a contract, a bill, an invoice or a legally binding acknowledgement of a debt. Whether someone owes anyone anything is between the people involved.
- It isn't advice. Nothing in Settled, including the guides, is financial, tax or legal advice.
Your content
What you put into Settled (names, expenses, items, photos, quick splits) stays yours. You give us permission to store it, process it and show it to the people you share it with, only as needed to run Settled; that permission ends when the content is deleted, except for copies the privacy policy says we keep for a short time. You're responsible for what you enter, and you confirm you have the right to share it, including photos you upload and the names of other people you add. Please add other people by first name or nickname, and don't enter health details, payment card numbers or other sensitive information about anyone.
Acceptable use
Don't use Settled to:
- post anything unlawful, threatening, harassing or hateful, or anything that infringes someone else's rights;
- upload intimate or sexual images of anyone, or any content involving minors in a sexual context;
- impersonate someone, or use another person's account;
- break or probe the service's security, get around rate limits, scrape it, or overload it;
- send spam, or use quick splits to spread links or content unrelated to splitting a cost.
We may remove content that breaks these rules, or that we're told about under the law, and we may suspend or close accounts that break them, usually after telling you why. If we remove something you posted, you can ask us to reconsider by emailing support@settledsplit.com.
Quick splits
Anyone with a quick split's link can open it and join. Share the link only with the people splitting the bill. The person who created a quick split controls it. A quick split nobody changes for 30 days is deleted.
Reporting content and copyright
To report content that breaks these terms or the law, including intimate images shared without consent, email support@settledsplit.com with a link to it or the name of the group or quick split. We act on reports of intimate images shared without consent within 48 hours.
If you believe content on Settled infringes your copyright, send a notice to support@settledsplit.com with: your signature (typed is fine); a description of the work; where the material is on Settled; your contact details; a statement that you believe in good faith the use isn't authorised; and a statement, under penalty of perjury, that your notice is accurate and you're the owner or authorised to act for them. We remove infringing material and close the accounts of repeat infringers.
A free service that can change
Settled is free. We may change, add or remove features, and we may stop offering Settled. If we decide to shut it down, we'll give signed-in users at least 30 days' notice where we can, so you can download your data. You can stop using Settled and delete your account at any time from the Account page.
No warranties
Settled is provided "as is" and "as available". As far as the law allows, we make no promises that it will always be available, error-free or fit for a particular purpose, and we disclaim implied warranties.
Limits on our responsibility
As far as the law allows, we're not responsible for indirect or consequential losses, for lost money or data, for disputes between you and the people you split with, or for what other users enter. Our total responsibility to you for anything arising from Settled is limited to US $50.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't legally be limited, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. If you live in the European Union, the United Kingdom or another place whose consumer law gives you rights that a contract can't take away, those rights still apply, and these terms don't limit them.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Before going to court, please email us so we can try to sort it out. Any court case will be heard in the state or federal courts located in Virginia, except that if you're a consumer living elsewhere, you may also bring a case where you live, and mandatory consumer protections of your home country still apply.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, the date at the top changes. For a material change, we'll tell signed-in users in the app or by email before it takes effect, and ask you to accept the new version. If you don't agree, stop using Settled and delete your account.
Everything else
These terms and the privacy policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Settled. If a court finds part of them unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce something straight away, we haven't given up the right to. You can't transfer these terms to someone else; we can transfer them if Settled is taken over by another person or company, who will then be bound by them.
